Laverne Ballard - Author

With each new accomplishment in her life, Laverne is always reminded of the past. But she is not limited by it. Not by a miserable childhood of homelessness and poverty—32 cities in 23 states and more than 200 horrific public shelters and cold alleyways. Not by living with a mentally ill mother who seesawed between sanity and madness. And not by dropping out of school in the fifth grade.

Today, Laverne is a wife and mother of four, a college grad, a community volunteer and a person with a story to tell.

A native of Newark, NJ, Laverne returned to the Garden State in the 1993 to start a new life. While working for Superior Court judge in Newark, she enrolled in Essex County College in Newark - but not before taking the GED twice. It was the summer of 2002 while taking a freshman writing class she first realized she was ready to confront her past head on. In response to a writing assignment, “What was the most pivotal moment in your life?” she turned in 15 pages about her experience being homeless in the ’80s and ’90s. That exercise gave her the impetus to begin writing a book-length memoir. She first shared her chilling narrative in the September 2006 issue of Essence Magazine.

In 2004, Laverne earned a Bachelor’s degree in political science at Bloomfield College, NJ -attending school at nights and weekend, working a full time as an executive assistant for an assemblymen and mayor, and managing a family. Laverne made the Dean’s List and was recognized with the school’s “Non-Traditional Student Award” during her senior year.

Laverne’s book God Bless the Child, published in September 2009, tells the story of being a young child and of homelessness, of mental illness and looking for a place to call home.

She currently resides between New Jersey and Georgia with her husband and four playful children. Her experience has led her to do extensive volunteer work with children’s programs such as the Head Start Policy Council. Laverne continues to inspire people by lending her voice to the cause of homelessness and mental illness, and offering solutions.

With God Bless the Child, Laverne turns the mirror to her audiences so they can take an honest look at their loved ones, themselves, and strangers to see what homelessness and mental illness look like, feel like, and what it sounds like—and then do something about it.

Coleridge E. Small, Jr. - Artist “Tale of the Tape”

Coleridge E. Small, Jr., aka “June” has been creating figures since the age of five-years-old, and in a most unconventional way. He has ingeniously mastered creating art out of such common items as tape and paper scraps. Diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in his teens, Small has since fine-tuned his talent into making incredible lifelike sculptures out of an unusual material for fine art—Duct Tape.

The “Tale of the Tape” (Small’s life story) begins normal enough. The son of West Indian (Caribbean) parents, Small was one of many children growing up in New York City as first generation Americans. A typical boy, he was actively involved and interested in sports and aspired to be a stellar athlete.

At the age of 15, Small was quite advanced in athletics. Yet in 1986, he started experiencing severe health complications. Approximately five months later, he was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. Slowly his athletic participation dwindled and the school year became difficult due to absences. Feeling defeated on various levels (academics and athletics) and adjusting to a complete lifestyle change, Small went into a deep depression.

Interestingly enough, locking himself away from the world proved beneficial in many respects. It was during that time Small delved more into his artwork and made his first sculpture out of duct tape; refusing to succumb to physical limitations and allowing his debilitating disease to stifle his creativity. In short, his imagination peaked and he began creating caricatures of his favorite sports heroes.

Today, Small has an extensive collection of various works. He has also been commissioned to create original lifelike pieces of: Eric Foster (Colts Defensive Tackle); jazz artist Charlie Rouse (tenor saxophonist who played with such greats as Thelonious Monk, Billy Eckstine, & Dizzy Gillespie); Heisman Trophy-winning American football quarterback “Tim” Tebow of the Florida Gators; and former WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr., to name a few. He is especially thankful to Max Kellerman (ESPN Host, HBO Boxing Commentator, author and journalist), for allowing one of his pieces to proudly display on the set of his self-titled radio show on 1050 ESPN.

Small’s artwork continues to gain national recognition in the industry as well as among sports professionals/fans/players. Expanding his repertoire, he is currently creating an international comic book series and toy line.

Despite his adversities, Small has gained much in its place—TALENT. He credits Crohn’s Disease for strengthening his gift; grateful, despite the challenges. An advocate for the cause, Small keeps fighting and pushing forward. He has been fortunate to meet others who are instrumental in getting the word out about the disease, including foundations that are bringing about national attention to the efforts of properly diagnosing those that are afflicted.
